I love to experiment with different bike parts, and the RedShift Shockstop stem is certainly high on my list. I decided not to get one for now as I’ve just switched to 2.4″ tyres with my new bike (up from 2.0″) which should offer more comfort. If I can swap just one thing at a time (rather than everything at once) I get to understand (and share) how each bike component changes the overall bike feel.
I used a Cane Creek Thudbuster suspension seatpost for many years and liked how it smoothened out the road. But when I got my KOGA WorldTraveller in 2017, I really wanted to test the perception that aluminium bikes are uncomfortable, so I fitted it with a regular aluminium seatpost. Turns out the difference in comfort between aluminium and steel is indiscernible with wide touring tyres! I ended up getting used to not having a suspension seatpost (you get very good at ‘unweighting’ your backside while you ride rough terrain) so I didn’t bother shipping my Thudbuster seatpost over to South America.
With my new bike, I’m testing the new Cane Creek eeSilk seatpost. It has 20mm of vertical flex, so it takes the edge off everything. On paper, a seatpost like this is perfect for me, so I’m looking forward to putting it to the test on the way up to Alaska.
