I’ve done enough research to know that I am statistically very safe in their territory provided I take a few measures. After all, wildlife is much more predictable than humans!
The big predators (lions, leopards, etc) will start hunting when it’s dark so the best thing I can do is to ensure I’m inside my tent at dusk. These animals see tents as objects like rocks. While they might smell you, they will likely not understand that you are in there.
Animals usually take the shortest path between places so I camp away from dirt roads, water holes, and animal tracks in the vegetation. I also wild camp in different places every night, so there is no chance of camp habituation.
I never walk around at night while animals are hunting. I also don’t leave any food scraps or dirty dishes outside my tent. If I hear any animals nearby, I avoid any movement or lights and generally keep very quiet.
If there are a LOT of lions about, people suggest having a fire outside your tent door and keeping it going all night. But it’s important to note that lions and other large predators are not out to get you. They would much rather eat a gazelle.
During the day, elephants are probably my biggest risk. The best thing I can do is to watch them from afar and never encroach on their space.
