These Solo Women Cyclists Have Epic Bicycle Touring Experience

Solo women cyclists are still pretty rare, so it’s always a real pleasure to meet one out on the road.

Their experience of bike touring is often very different from mine. I’m tall—around two metres—and I’ve never had to deal with harassment. I don’t have to manage a period while travelling, turn down unwanted advances, explain why I’m not married, or constantly think about my personal safety.

Starting your first solo bike trip can feel intimidating. It’s natural to want a friend or partner to come along, but that’s not always possible. Personally, I’ve found that waiting for others has sometimes held me back from trips I was really excited about.

That’s why I created this portal: to help women go from dreaming about a bike trip to building the confidence to actually get out there and explore. I truly believe that understanding how to handle different challenges can ease a lot of the anxiety and fear.

I haven’t included specific tips, but I’ve gathered links and contact info for solo women cyclists I’ve met, hosted, ridden with, read about, or followed online. You can get in contact with them instead.

These women are amazing role models, and many have written openly on their blogs about how they handle the unique challenges of solo travel. I hope this portal gives you a solid starting point!

The Big Women On Wheels Book

There’s a book you can get that shares personal stories from over 100 solo women cyclists!

Reading it really opened my eyes to all the different ways women handle travelling the world by bike. One thing that really stood out to me was the advice to avoid smiling at men in some places because it can be taken as a sign you’re open to sex.

Big Women On Wheels is US $19.95, and you can get a copy HERE.
